Victoria Beckham Talks Quality & Her Vision of Empowering Women
“You know I’m proof that you don’t have to play by the rules all the time” is what Victoria Beckham told Bridget Foley, WWD’s Executive Editor Monday evening at the publication’s Apparel and Retail CEO Summit.
Like many women she’s a working mom and wife, with four kids to boot. The difference? She’s also a former Spice Girl and wife of famous soccer player David Beckham.
Also like other women, Beckham was full of nerves when launching her epynomous collection, nervous that people wouldn’t take her seriously and nervous that people would compare her venture to other celebrities turned designers. But she soon received comfort from a friend, by the name of…Marc Jacobs. “As long as the quality is great, then people can say it’s not their personal taste, but they can’t say that it’s rubbish.” A sentiment Beckham agrees with.
Since starting in 2008, turnover for the Victoria Beckham collection has increased 120 percent, with more growth expected. Why the success? Victoria guesses its her desire to maintain the quality of each piece and control over the company’s direction. This means 5 am meetings in the morning with a baby in arm to which Beckham remarks “I love it.”
While Beckham stresses focus, she tells the audience she doesn’t know what’s next. She’s working on e-commerce in the short-term and hoping for reaching the stars from there.
Perhaps that’s the lesson to us all, not getting too caught up in the bigger picture and just taking it one step at a time.
